Fire dampers are the mechanical devices that will have been scattered throughout your ventilation ductwork to shut off the flow of air in the system in the event of a fire. They are fitted with fusible links, which release a fire damper or shutter when the device detects that the temperature has risen to 165 degrees Fahrenheit or above.

You’ll normally find them located at points where the ductwork itself penetrates fire compartment walls and floors.

The fire dampers at your premises need to be tested on a regular basis to ensure they with British Standard 9999, which specifically covers the routine inspection and maintenance of ventilation and air conditioning ductwork. Regular testing will also ensure you fulfil your obligations as an employer as per the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

If they are not working properly due to a build up of waste in the damper or other operational issues, your fire containment system will be compromised, and fire and smoke will be able to pass through at a much faster rate, endangering the lives of everyone in the building.

These essential components must be checked as soon as they are installed, before the ductwork is fully signed off. From there, they should be inspected and tested at least every two years. If you are running sprint-operated dampers, bear in mind that these need to be looked at every year.
